Soft Wax: How to Apply Step-by-Step

As a professional esthetician, you should give your clients the best treatment possible and leave them with high-quality long-term results. The product that can help you reach that goal is soft wax — it is known as a traditional hair removal medium and leaves all customers with smooth, soft skin. In this article, we will cover the whole process of using soft wax—step by step.

Skin Preparation

First, talk about your client’s hair removal history. Ask them if they shave and check their hair length. Their hair should be about 1/4 inch long for the best results. Wax won’t be able to grip hair that’s too short, and the longer hair won’t be removed properly. Though, you can trim it if that’s a part of your service.

Once the client is on the table, clean their skin with a pre-wax treatment. Pat it dry. If it’s still wet or oily, use talc or baby powder to absorb the moisture.

Warming Up

Next, turn on a wax warmer. Place the soft wax can right into the machine and close the lid. All wax from ItalWax requires different temperatures—so check the packaging for directions. Stir the wax with the spatula so it melts evenly. Once it has a honey-like texture and doesn’t have any clamps, it should be ready to use. Do not turn off the warmer, as it will still be used for temperature maintenance.

Regardless of your experience, always test the wax before application. Put a little on your inner wrist. It should be warm enough to spread evenly, but not too hot. Otherwise, it will burn the client and cause redness or even blisters.

Applying

It is time to apply. Put the applicator into the wax pot and get enough wax for one strip. Spread a thin, even layer in the direction of hair growth. The soft formula adheres well to the skin and hair, so it doesn’t have to be thick. Press the strip on top of the wax and smooth over it with your hand. Don’t go back and forth—instead, go with the direction of the hair like before.

Avoid pressing the whole strip against the wax. Leave a small patch to grip onto it when you remove it. This will make the process faster and easier for you.

Removing

Hold the skin taut with one hand and grab onto the tab of the strip with the other. Remove the wax strip in the opposite direction of hair growth. Go fast and try to do it in one swift motion. Avoid pulling the strip up—it will hurt a lot more and can tear the skin. Instead, opt to pull the strip parallel to the skin. After the strip is off, press your hand against the patch of skin. Apply enough pressure to ease the pain.

Aftercare

When you use a hard formula, there is rarely any residue left. Soft wax, however, is stickier and can leave some patches behind. When you are done, it should be removed from the client’s skin with:

  • coconut oil;
  • professional wax remover;
  • warm wet washcloth.

Massage the patch in small circles and wipe away the remainder of the substance. Then, use aloe gel, cooling lotion, or any other preferred post-wax product to soothe the skin. Let the client know that they shouldn’t exfoliate the skin or wear tight clothing for at least 24 hours after the service.
